Tyne United New Years Head 2020

Berwick only had 3 competitors at Tyne United New Year Head on 25th January.  A reasonably mild day with light wind made for good racing conditions over the 5000m from Scotswood to Newburn up the Tyne.  Chris Eke and Andrew Cairns competing in open double sculls had a good field to race against.  From the start the Berwick crew were dominant almost to their cost as they were catching slower moving boats and at times were forced to take the outside of bends, however this did not stop the lads from winning open doubles by over 1 minute.  An excellent first showing for 2020.

In the afternoon division, Hilary Cairns teamed up with Jo and Angie (Yarm) and Sarah (Tyne UTD) for Ladies masters E Quad sculls.  The ladies made a move from the start and pushed hard to overtake a slower moving senior quad before the first cross over.  From there it was legs and hard work.  Up the last Newburn straight the ladies were delighted to catch and overtake another open quad, this forced them to keep working right to the line.  They were delighted to win E/F Quads and be fastest ladies quad of the afternoon.
