Berwick hosed Northern Rowers at the weekend for the Long Distance sculls.

Thankfully the wind did not pick up too much and conditions stayed relatively good for the 58 crews covering the 5000 meter race from West Ord to The Boathouse.

Fastest boat of the day was a Hexham/Tarn double scull covering the course in just over 21minutes.

There were only 6 Berwick competitors as lots of hands were required to run the event. However Hilary Cairns and Catherine Bowman (Hexham) were pleased to finish as quickest ladies double scull and Robin Morrison is having a fantastic late season scoring his second win of the series in masters F single sculls. Robin was quickly followed by Elvira Drummond Ladies open singles and Will Dalgleish J18 single sculls. Ian Smith and Ian Boyd-Whyte masters H double sculls completed the line up for the Berwick crews, who all very much enjoyed the opportunity to race on home water.

Further away from home Chris Eke and Andrew Cairns represented Berwick at the Senior National Championships at Holme Pierre Pont in Nottingham. This event attracts the very best senior rowers in the country, the day begins with a 1900 metre time trial following this crews are seeded into semi finals. Chris and Andrew had a good time trial of just over 7 minutes into a strong head wind.

The men then put in a sterling performance to finish 3rd in their semi final over the full 2000m course which placed them in the overall F final. In the final Chris and Andrew did not have their most powerful start but settled very quickly to be challenging for the lead at 250m in. By the 500m mark they had moved into the lead and despite being pushed very hard in the closing 250m by Midlands University they were very pleased to win the F final. This also placed them 4th in the club shield, a competition for clubs without high performance facilities. Berwick ARC are very proud of Chris and Andrews achievements with only Thames RC crews and Reading RC ahead both bigger and better resourced clubs.
